Brick Repair in Omaha, NE

Flaking faces, cracked units, brick you can wiggle by hand. We find what caused the damage, fix that first, and set matched replacements so the wall reads whole again.

Brick is the most forgiving exterior a house can have, right up until water finds a way in. Then faces start popping off, cracks start walking through units, and a wall that stood quietly for fifty years suddenly looks like it is coming apart. The good news is that brick is also the most repairable exterior a house can have, when the repair is done by someone who treats matching as part of the job.

Most of the brick repair calls we get in Omaha come down to a handful of causes: freeze-thaw water damage, rusted steel lintels over windows and doors, settling that opened a stair-step crack, or an older repair done with the wrong mortar. The visible damage is the symptom. Replace the brick without addressing the cause and you buy the same repair twice.

Omaha Masonry starts with why the brick failed, fixes that, then cuts out the damaged units and sets replacements matched by size, color, and texture. Mortar gets blended to the aged original and joints tooled to the same profile. Done right, you should have to hunt for the repair to find it.

Signs your brick needs repair

  • Brick faces flaking, popping off, or piling up as grit at the base of the wall
  • A stair-step crack following the mortar joints up the wall
  • Cracks running through the brick units themselves, not just the joints
  • A sagging or rust-streaked steel lintel above a window or door
  • Brick you can wiggle, or a section that sounds hollow when tapped
  • White chalky staining that keeps coming back after rain

Brick repairs we handle

Spalled brick replacement

Bricks with popped or flaking faces cut out and replaced with matched units before water reaches the wall behind them.

Crack repair

Stair-step and vertical cracks diagnosed first, then rebuilt, because a crack always has a cause and the cause is the real repair.

Loose and displaced brick

Brick that moves by hand reset properly, with the failed bedding behind it corrected instead of glued over.

Lintel replacement

Rusted, sagging steel over windows and doors replaced, and the cracked brickwork above rebuilt straight.

Brick veneer repair

Modern veneer walls repaired with the ties, flashing, and weep details that keep water moving out of the wall.

Wall section rebuilds

Where damage has spread too far to patch, we take the wall down to sound brick and rebuild in matched material.

Our process

How we repair brick

1

Find the cause

Water, steel, settlement, or bad mortar. We identify why the brick failed before touching it, so the repair does not repeat itself.

2

Cut out the damage

Failed units and joints come out cleanly, back to sound brick, with the surrounding wall protected the whole way.

3

Match the replacement

Brick matched by size, color, and texture from reclaimed and compatible new stock, with mortar blended to the aged original.

4

Rebuild and tool

Replacements go in with full joints and correct details, then get tooled to the existing profile and cleaned up.

Why Omaha brick fails the way it does

Nebraska freeze-thaw is the engine behind most brick damage here. Water gets into a wall through failed joints, bad caps, or ground splash, then freezes and expands. Soft-fired brick on older Omaha homes takes it worst, which is why spalling shows up so often on pre-war houses in neighborhoods like Dundee, Benson, and Field Club.

The other repeat offender is steel. Lintels over openings rust, swell, and lift the brickwork above them, which is where those clean horizontal cracks above windows come from. Replacing the steel and rebuilding the courses above it is routine work for us, and it stops a crack that would otherwise keep growing every winter.

Questions

Brick Repair FAQs

Why are my bricks flaking apart?

That is spalling. The brick is absorbing water that freezes and pops the face off. Common causes are failed mortar joints, bad caps or sills letting water in above, and sealed brick that cannot dry out. We fix the moisture path first, then replace the damaged brick.

Can you match fifty-year-old brick?

In most cases, yes. We source reclaimed and compatible new brick and place the closest units where they read most naturally. Combined with mortar blended to the aged original, the repair disappears into the wall from the street.

What does a stair-step crack mean?

A crack that steps up through the joints usually points to movement, often settling at the foundation or a rusted lintel lifting the wall. We diagnose the movement first. Rebuilding the crack without fixing the cause just schedules the next crack.

Do I need a few bricks replaced or a whole section rebuilt?

That depends on how far the water has traveled behind the wall, and we will tell you honestly at the estimate. Plenty of jobs are a dozen bricks and a morning of work, and catching them at that size is exactly why acting early pays.

Is brick repair worth it on an older home?

Almost always. Brick walls are built to be repaired in place, and a matched repair restores both the weather seal and the value of the original material. Rebuilding in new brick or residing costs far more than maintaining what is there.

How much does brick repair cost?

It scales with the number of units, the height of the wall, and what caused the damage, so we quote each job after seeing it. Estimates are free, and small repairs stay small when the cause gets fixed with them.
